PetrEx TM

ERSINT PetrEx is a blend of live, naturally-occurring microbes which digest both short and long chain hydrocarbons including oil sludge, coal tar, and aromatics including benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, ethylene, toluene, xylene, phenol, crude oil and refined petroleum products. Simply put, ERSINT PetrEx feeds off carbon. It will feed off the most basic carbon source first and work its way to the most complex. With time most carbon sources will be dissolved.

ERSINT PetrEx effectively digests petroleum products as well as other organic pollutants. The various microorganisms in PetrEx are synergistic as they assist each other in the digestion process. Some of the microorganisms digest low molecular weight compounds and others digest heavy, tarry types of oil and organic sludge.

ERSINT microorganisms are all harmless soil bacteria that are present in low numbers in practically all soil. These organisms are grown in pure culture in our laboratory and specifically blended for use as a bio-remediation product. By growing the organisms in the laboratory with our unique culture process, large numbers of organisms in exceptionally high active concentrations can be economically delivered for rapid bio-remediation. When compared to "fertilizing" existing on-site bacteria to stimulate their growth to remediate oil contamination, ERSINT's high potency blend does a much more effective job in a fraction of the time.

ERSINT PetrEx is non-toxic, non-pathogenic (won't cause disease), non-contaminating, non-acidic, non-caustic, non-corrosive and contains no phosphates. The microorganisms digest the oil and metabolize it into harmless carbon dioxide, water and fatty acids. The fatty acids are suspended within the water column and become a rich food source for marine life.

ERSINT PetrEx will not harm animals or humans. It is completely harmless to marine life. It makes water safer and healthier for marine life as its bacteria reduce biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) — the amount of oxygen needed for biochemical oxidation of wastes. When BOD is high, so much of the oxygen in the water is used to oxidize waste that there is not sufficient oxygen to support marine life.

ERSINT PetrEx is harmless to plants. Areas adjacent to treatment areas show marked environmental improvement as PetrEx reduces organic waste.

There is no harm (discoloration, corrosion or deterioration) to any surface which comes into contact with ERSINT PetrEx.

PetrEx Treatment & Application

Specific bio-remediation treatment rates and application depend on the particular problem to be solved. Field tests are a necessary part of our ongoing research and development program. Data such as soil or water conditions, volume, thickness and samples of oil, and whether the oil will be treated on-site or transported to another location are evaluated in determining a remediation program.

  • Treatment Of Oil Spills in Water
ERSINT PetrEx may be applied by aerial spray, boat spray or by pouring directly into contaminated water. During the treatment period, oil contaminated water in still water such as a pond or storage tank should be aerated (agitated) two or three times per week. In the open ocean natural wave action should suffice. With the use of ERSINT MultiFactor, it may not be necessary to add nitrogen, phosphate or potassium to the contaminated water. MultiFactor alone normally is sufficient to maintain the appropriate nutrient levels (between 100 - 200 ppm) for PetrEx during the treatment period.
  • Treatment of Oil Spills on Land
ERSINT PetrEx should be sprayed directly onto contaminated soil, thoroughly saturating all contaminated soil. It may be necessary to add nitrogen, phosphate and potassium to the contaminated soil to maintain the appropriate nutrient levels for PetrEx during the treatment period.

The contaminated soil should be mechanically tilled a minimum of two to three times per week during treatment, and water should be added as necessary to maintain proper oxygen and moisture content for effective PetrEx digesting action.

These steps should be repeated until the contaminated soil has been cleaned to less than 100 ppm in accordance with EPA Method 418.1.
  • Treatment of Bilge Tanks
ERSINT PetrEx, along with ERSINT MultiFactor microbial nutrient, may be applied directly in bilge tank or bilge may be drained and scraped transporting contents (oil, sludge and water) to an on-shore treatment tank for remediation, thereby reducing down-time to ship. Bilge or treatment tank with heavy oil sludge should be aerated (agitated) daily. Higher concentrations of PetrEx may be used for ship application to assist with a rapid remediation.
